Day 3 started with our second breakfast at Hawaiian Style Cafe
I am a huge fan of breakfast. It's pretty much my favorite meal of the day- next to dinner... and lunch. Ok, so I love food. That being said, I'm usually not a big fan of pancakes. However, the coconut pancakes at Hawaiian Style Cafe are amazing and so are the omelettes, the hash browns, and the biscuits and gravy. Yum!
Our next stop was Waipio Valley.
The paved one-lane road down into the valley (900-foot descent) has a steep 25 percent grade.
I'll admit I was a little nervous, but thankfully Todd handled it like a 4-wheeling pro.
Arrived at the stunning black sand beach in Waipi'o valley.
The black sand was as soft as baby powder.
There's a spot on the black sand beach where fresh water runs into the ocean. It was neat to feel the cold temperature of the fresh water and the noticeably warmer temperature of the ocean water.
Our next stop was Akaka Falls.

What I remember most about this waterfall was hearing the force of the water falling from that high. It was remarkable!
On the way to our next destination, we found this amazing little snack shop. Nachos, ice cream, and of course...
the trip wouldn't be complete without a shave ice!
Our next stop was Rainbow Falls.
What I will remember most about Rainbow Falls was that we were able to Face Time with the kids. Not quite as good as having them there with us, but still fun.

We did a lot of driving on Day 3. Plenty of time for Ann and me to take selfies in the backseat.
And finally, the reason I was wearing all black clothing on Day 3 was for the helicopter ride (apparently it helps prevent glare on the windows).

The Mission Impossible theme song played through our headsets as we took off. I felt like we were out to save the world from evil.
Our pilot first flew us over the Kilauea Volcano.
I couldn't believe that we were actually flying over an active volcano.
It was truly amazing to see the hot lava
It was incredible to see the new land being formed by the lava.

Our pilot then flew us over the beautiful landscape. There were so many waterfalls. It really looked like something out of Jurassic Park.

Back to our rooms for a quick shower and change before dinner.
Dinner was at a lovely Italian restaurant that evening.
Followed by a walk around our resort and along the beach to see the resting turtles.
